Do you know the feeling of a dry, parched face with the uneasy sensation that every pore is clogged no matter what you do?
That’s how I feel most days. Actually, that’s how I felt.
Granted, I’m not a skincare freak. Until a year ago, I used only a moisturizer and a make-up remover at night but I kept asking myself obsessively where did I go wrong, what was I missing here?!!!
My face had no glow and the instant that last piece of foundation disappeared, I could see forehead wrinkles and redness and a couple of pimples struggling to get out. I didn’t know what to do!!
At first, I kept telling myself it’s a hygiene thing. I touch my face all day long, taking dust from wherever and putting it on the face. So I stopped touching my face altogether. Aaand… pimples stopped appearing so often but my face looked the same.
I lathered it in cream, hating my messed-up complexion, but nothing happened. Finally, I started asking here and there, reading more about skincare and realized I hadn’t “covered” a basic step: cleansing.
So, I tested some products and stuck with Avene Cleanance Cleansing Gel for blemish-prone skin in summer (when my face gets super oily and shiny) and with Nivea Cleansing Mousse for normal-mixed skin the rest of the year.
Finaaally, I could see some results! My face was beginning to clear up, felt more soft to the touch and pores were beginning to tighten up. That said, I knew food habits took their toll.
After a couple of weeks of drinking more water than usual (nooo, I’m not at 8 glasses/day yet, I don’t know if I’ll ever be that goop-y) and reducing sugar intake (keeping only dark chocolate and no-sugar biscuits + black coffee instead of the regular Starbucks order), pimples disappeared and rarely dared coming back.
But the real miracle happened when I realized I could get a facial in a bottle!! Yep, guys, you don’t have to go to a specialist for a deep exfoliation. I love microdermabrasions; as a coat of dead cells is gently removed, my skin starts breathing again! Yeeey!
But I didn’t have the time to follow through with weekly sessions.
So, I got a Microdermabrasion Cream from Gerovital Plant. At $5, I got it in a whim to see what it could do. I didn’t have any expectations.
The pump releases a small quantity of hard cream, packed with fine crystals, that act as a gentle but efficient scrub. I applied small amounts a couple of times and massaged it with circular motions. The cream almost disappeared into my skin so I had doubts it would come off with water or exfoliate thoroughly.
But, after patting my face with a white paper towel, I couldn’t believe my eyes! Behold, a rosy, fresh, soft, radiant face I never thought I’d see beaming from the mirror!!!
Now, that was a Cinderella moment! After checking my face out in all the mirrors available (plus camera phones), I had to contain myself. If not, I might have exfoliated a couple of times a week not just once, as it is recommended 🙂
So, now, I’m a gal that exfoliates, cleanses, moisturizes, removes make-up and sprays some thermal water from time to time. Oh, and when I feel really fancy I even put a mask on! If I could just nail that “hydrate, hydrate, hydrate” rule…
well, I’d have one less reason to envy Emily DiDonato.
